As I was walking home the other day and I actually stopped to stare at table mountain, that’s when I thought to myself ‘how did come up with that name?’. As a Namibian I'm wondering, do Capetonians think the same? For me to better understand why or how “Table Mountain got its name, I have to break it down into two parts 1) Table and 2) Mountain for a bit of research.
Let us start off with ‘table’. . . .hmmm, I personally don’t think that the name Table Mountain fits because it does not look like a table and it does not have table legs, see what I am getting to? I can understand them just calling the mountain that because it is flat at the top like a table, yet would ‘Flat Mountain’ be a better name? I do not think so!
Now for a look at the word mountain . . . that is pretty straight forward, because Table Mountain is in fact a mountain. Table Mountain is also known as plateau, but image it was called able Plateau Mountain or Table Plateau . . . not so attractive hey?
Interesting perspective...
ReplyDeleteI've always thought "Table Mountain" was the perfect name for it!
